A question of ownership

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of the infrastructure of everyday life. It helps shape the information we see, the tools we use, and the decisions organizations make. Behind each system are choices about training data, access, incentives, and accountability. Those choices deserve as much attention as the technology itself.

Access is not the same as agency

Being able to use a tool does not necessarily mean being able to understand or influence it. Meaningful agency starts with clear explanations, ways to challenge a result, and the ability to choose an alternative. A more open future depends on making those options practical rather than theoretical.

Follow the incentives

When assessing a new AI product, ask who benefits when it succeeds, what information it collects, and how its output is reviewed. These questions do not require rejecting innovation. They make it possible to embrace innovation with a clearer understanding of its trade-offs.

The conversation is still open

The future of AI is not a finished story. Communities, researchers, policymakers, and users all have a role in shaping it. The starting point is curiosity: look beyond impressive demonstrations and ask what kind of world these systems are helping build.
